Diagnosis & Repair
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus LS 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- If using OBD-II scan tool, go to step 8. If using hand-held tester, check valve timing. Repair as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
- Start the engine and warm it up. Connect the hand-held tester and select VVT from the ACTIVE TEST menu. Check engine speed when operating OCV by hand-held tester. If OCV is OFF, engine speed should be normal. If OCV is ON, idle should be rough or engine should stall. If not okay, go to next step. If okay, VVT system is okay. DTCs are also output when a foreign object is detected in some parts of the system in the engine oil. As ECM is controlled to eject a foreign object, there is no problem on VVT. There is also no problem on VVT as the oil filter should catch the foreign object in the engine oil.
- Check voltage between terminals OCV+ and OCV- of ECM connector. Turn the ignition switch ON, and check the waveform between terminals OCV+ and OCV- of the ECM connector. See Figure. The waveform frequency is lengthened as the engine speed becomes higher. If okay, go to next step. If not okay, check and replace ECM.
- Remove the timing belt. Remove cylinder head cover. Remove OCV. Drain the oil in the VVT controller assembly. Check whether the oil in VVT controller assembly is drained or not. See Fig 1. If oil in VVT controller assembly is drained, go to next step. If oil is not drained, replace VVT controller assembly, then go to next step.
- Check OCV and replace as necessary, then go to next step. If okay, go to next step.
- Check blockage of OCV, oil check valve and oil pipe No.1. Repair or replace as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
- Clear the DTC. Check whether or not DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 reoccur. If not, VVT system is okay. If DTCs are stored, replace ECM.
- If using OBD-II scan tool, check valve timing. Repair valve timing as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
- Start the engine. Check the engine speed when disconnecting the OCV connector. Check the engine speed when applying battery positive voltage between the terminals of the OCV. See Fig 2. If engine speed is normal with connector disconnected and idle is rough or engine stalls when voltage is applied to OCV, go to next step. If not, go to step 14.
- Turn the ignition switch ON, and check waveform between terminals OCV+ and OCV- of the ECM connector. The waveform frequency is lengthened as the engine speed becomes higher. See Figure. If not okay, replace ECM. If okay, VVT system is okay. DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is also output when a foreign object is detected in some parts of the system in the engine oil, and then the system returns to normal in a short time. As ECM is controlled to eject a foreign object, there is no problem on the VVT. There is also no problem on the VVT as the oil filter should catch the foreign object in the engine oil.
- Remove the timing belt. Remove the cylinder head cover. Remove the OCV. Drain the oil in the VVT controller assembly. Check whether the oil in VVT controller assembly is drained or not. See Fig 1. If oil in the VVT controller assembly is drained, go to next step. If not, replace VVT controller assembly, and then go to step 5.
- Check OCV. See step 2. Replace as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
- Check blockage of OCV, oil check valve and oil pipe No.1. Repair or replace as necessary. If okay, go to next step.
- Clear the DTC. Check whether or not DTCs P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 reoccur. If not, VVT system is okay. If DTCs are stored, replace ECM.
