Diagnosis & Repair

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus RX 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Check spark plug and spark. If okay, go to next step. If not okay, go to step  4.
  2. Check for open and short in harness and connector in IGF and IGT signal circuits between ECM and ignition coil with igniter. Repair or replace harness or connector.
  3. Remove the glove compartment. Disconnect the ignition coil with the igniter connector. Turn the ignition switch ON. Measure the voltage between terminals IGF of the ECM connector and body ground. See Fig 1. Voltage should be 4.5-5.5 volts. If okay, replace ignition coil with igniter. If not okay, check and replace ECM.

  4. Check for open and short in harness and connector in IGT signal circuit between ECM and ignition coil with igniter. If okay, go to next step. If not okay, repair or replace harness or connector.
  5. Remove the glove compartment. Turn the ignition switch on. Measure the voltage between terminals IGT1-IGT6 of the ECM connector and body ground when the engine is cranked. See Fig 2. If using oscilloscope, during cranking or idling, check the waveform between terminals IGT1-IGT6 and E1 of the ECM connector. Correct waveform appears as shown, with rectangle waves. See Fig 3. If voltage is more than 0.1 volts and less than 4.5 volts, go to next step. If not, check and replace ECM.

  6. Disconnect the ignition coil with the igniter connector. Measure the voltage between terminals IGT1-IGT6 of the ECM connector and body ground when the engine is cranked. See Fig 2. If voltage is more than 0.1 volt and less than 4.5 volt, go to next step. If not, check and replace ECM.
  7. Disconnect the ignition coil with the igniter connector. Measure the voltage between terminal No. 1 of the ignition coil with the igniter connector and body ground when the ignition switch is turned to ON and START position. See Fig 4. If voltage is 9-14 volts, go to next step. If not, repair ignition coil with igniter power source circuit.

  8. Check for open and short in harness and connector between ignition switch and ignition coil with igniter. If okay, go to next step. If not, repair or replace harness or connector.
  9. Remove AM2 fuse from the engine room junction block. See Fig 5. Check the continuity of the AM2 fuse. If okay, Replace ignition coil with igniter. If not, check for short in all harness and components connected to AM2 fuse.
