Diagnosis & Repair

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Lexus RX 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If using OBD-II scan tool, go to step  8. If using hand-held tester, start and warm engine. Connect hand-held tester and select VVT from ACTIVE TEST menu. Check engine speed when operating OCV by hand. When OCV is off, engine speed should be normal. When OCV is on, idle should be rough or engine should stall. If system operates okay, check for intermittent problem such as possible foreign object caught in some part of the system or in engine oil. If system does not operate okay, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. Check waveform between terminals OC1+ and OC1-, and OC2+ and OC2- of ECM connector. Waveform frequency is lengthened as engine speed increases. See Figure. If waveform is not to specification, replace ECM. If waveform is to specification, go to next step.
  3. Check for open or short circuit in harness and connector between ECM and OCV. Repair as necessary. If harness is okay, go to next step.
  4. Check OCV. See CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - ES300 & RX300 article. Replace as necessary. If OCV is okay, go to next step.
  5. Check VVT controller assembly. See VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT) SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - ES300 & RX300 article. Replace as necessary. If VVT controller assembly is okay, go to next step.
  6. Check blockage of OCV, oil check valve and oil pipe No. 1. Repair as necessary. If oil pipe is okay, go to next step.
  7. Clear DTC. Check whether DTCs P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are stored. If DTCs are not stored, VVT system is okay. If DTCs are stored, check valve timing (possible loose or jumping teeth of timing belt. Repair or adjust as necessary. If timing is okay, replace ECM.
  8. Start engine. Check engine speed when disconnecting OCV connector, then check engine speed when applying battery positive voltage between terminals of OCV. See Figure. If engine speed is normal when disconnecting connector, then runs rough or stalls when voltage is applied to OCV terminals, go to next step. If engine speed is not normal when disconnecting connector, then does not run rough or stall when voltage is applied to OCV terminals, go to step  11.
  9. Turn ignition on. Check waveform between terminals OC1+ and OC1-, and OC2+ and OC2- of ECM connector. Waveform frequency is lengthened as engine speed increases. See Figure. If waveform is not to specification, go to next step. If waveform is to specification, VVT system is okay.
  10. Check for open or short circuit in harness and connector between ECM and OCV. Repair as necessary. If harness is okay, replace ECM.
  11. Check OCV. See CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - ES300 & RX300 article. Replace as necessary. If OCV is okay, go to next step.
  12. Check VVT controller assembly. See VARIABLE VALVE TIMING (VVT) SYSTEM in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - ES300 & RX300 article. Replace as necessary. If VVT controller assembly is okay, go to next step.
  13. Check blockage of OCV, oil check valve and oil pipe No. 1. Repair as necessary. If oil pipe is okay, go to next step.
