Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus ES 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Measure voltage between positive and negative terminal of battery. If voltage is 10-14 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 10-14 volts, repair battery or charging system as necessary.
  2. Check DTCs. See RETRIEVING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. If no DTC is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC is retrieved, go to appropriate DTC diagnostic test.
  3. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access instrument cluster and disconnect harness connector C7. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect harness connectors. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Reconnect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire). See Fig 1. If voltage is less than one volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair or replace Black/Yellow wire to instrument cluster.
  4. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait 90 seconds. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace Black/Yellow wire to instrument cluster.
  5. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A31, terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire) and instrument cluster connector C7, terminal No. 12 (White wire). See Figure & Fig 1 . If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace Black/Yellow wire to instrument cluster.
  6. Reconnect instrument cluster connector C7 and air bag sensor assembly connector A31. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster connector C7, terminal No. 12 (White wire). If voltage is 8-16 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 8-16 volts, repair or replace instrument cluster.
  7. Turn ignition off and wait at least 10 seconds. Turn ignition on and observe AIR BAG warning light. If AIR BAG warning light illuminates, repair or replace instrument cluster. If AIR BAG warning light does not illuminate, replace air bag sensor assembly.
