Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Camry. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. AS PER THE BOOK. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 38/B1154 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 39/B1155 is displayed along with DTC 38/B1154, disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect harness connector A24. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Proceed to step  7 and perform steps  7,  8 and  9. If DTC 38/B1154 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT .
  2. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and inspect for proper connection of harness connectors. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If air bag sensor assembly connectors are not properly connected, reconnect connectors and perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If air bag sensor assembly connectors are properly connected, go to next step.
  3. Access right rear air bag sensor and inspect for proper connection of harness connector. See FRONT AIR BAG SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If rear air bag sensor connector are not properly connected, reconnect connector and perform system operation check. If rear air bag sensor connector are properly connected, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A24. Disconnect right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Connect jumper wire between Gray/Red wire (circuit ESCR) and Blue/Black wire (circuit VUCR) on harness side of right rear air bag sensor connector. Also, connect jumper wire between Light Green/Black wire (circuit CSR-) and Blue/White wire (circuit CSR+) on harness side of right rear air bag sensor connector. Measure resistance between harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 19 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 20 (Gray/Red wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is more then one ohm in either measurement, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly. If resistance is less than one ohm in both measurements, go to next step.
  5. Remove jumper wires from rear air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12 (Light Green/Black wire), 18 (Blue/White wire) and 19 (Blue/Black wire). If resistance is less then one megohm in any circuit, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly. If resistance is more than one megohm in all circuits, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance between harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 19 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 20 (Gray/Red wire). Measure resistance between harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is less then one megohm in either measurement, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly. If resistance is more than one megohm in both measurements, go to next step.
  7. Reconnect right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminal No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is less then one megohm, replace right rear air bag sensor. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect left rear air bag sensor harness connector. Disconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A22. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A22, terminal No. 15 (Blue/Yellow wire, circuit CSL+). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less then one megohm, replace wiring harness between left rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly.
  9. Reconnect left rear air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A22, terminal No. 15 (Blue/Yellow wire). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left rear air bag sensor assembly.
  10. If DTC 39/B1155 is displayed along with DTC 38/B1154, disconnect right rear air bag sensor harness connector. If DTC 39/B1155 is displayed along with DTC 38/B1154, reconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A22. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12, 18 and 19. If voltage is more then one volt, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, replace left rear air bag sensor assembly.
  11. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Reconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A24. Remove right and left rear air bag sensors. Install right rear air bag sensor on left side and connect to left rear air bag sensor harness connector. Install left rear air bag sensor on right side and connect to right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC 38/B1154 and 39/B1155 are not displayed, system is operating normally at this time. Check for intermittent fault. If DTC 38/B1154 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 39/B1155 is displayed, replace right rear air bag sensor assembly.
  1. WHAT MIKE THINKS THE BOOK MEANS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 38/B1154 is displayed, go to next step. If DTC 39/B1155 is displayed along with DTC 38/B1154, disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect harness connector A24. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to step  7. If DTC 38/B1154 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT .
  2. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and inspect for proper connection of harness connectors. See AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If air bag sensor assembly connectors are not properly connected, reconnect connectors and perform system operation check. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK . If air bag sensor assembly connectors are properly connected, go to next step.
  3. Access right rear air bag sensor and inspect for proper connection of harness connector. See FRONT AIR BAG SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If rear air bag sensor connector are not properly connected, reconnect connector and perform system operation check. If rear air bag sensor connector are properly connected, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A24. Disconnect right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Connect jumper wire between Gray/Red wire (circuit ESCR) and Blue/Black wire (circuit VUCR) on harness side of right rear air bag sensor connector. Also, connect jumper wire between Light Green/Black wire (circuit CSR-) and Blue/White wire (circuit CSR+) on harness side of right rear air bag sensor connector. Measure resistance between harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 19 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 20 (Gray/Red wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is more then one ohm in either measurement, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly. If resistance is less than one ohm in both measurements, go to next step.
  5. Remove jumper wires from rear air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12 (Light Green/Black wire), 18 (Blue/White wire) and 19 (Blue/Black wire). If resistance is less then one megohm in any circuit, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly. If resistance is more than one megohm in all circuits, go to next step.
  6. Measure resistance between harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 19 (Blue/Black wire) and No. 20 (Gray/Red wire). Measure resistance between harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12 (Light Green/Black wire) and No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is less then one megohm in either measurement, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly. If resistance is more than one megohm in both measurements, go to next step.
  7. Reconnect right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminal No. 18 (Blue/White wire). If resistance is less then one megohm, replace right rear air bag sensor. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step.
  8. Disconnect left rear air bag sensor harness connector. Disconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A22. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A22, terminal No. 15 (Blue/Yellow wire, circuit CSL+). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less then one megohm, replace wiring harness between left rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly.
  9. Reconnect left rear air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A22, terminal No. 15 (Blue/Yellow wire, circuit CSL+). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, replace left rear air bag sensor assembly.
  10. Disconnect right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and harness side of air bag sensor assembly connector A24, terminals No. 12, 18 and 19. If voltage is more then one volt, go to next step. If voltage is less than one volt, replace wiring harness between right rear air bag sensor and air bag sensor assembly.
  11. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Reconnect air bag sensor assembly harness connector A24. Remove right and left rear air bag sensors. Install right rear air bag sensor on left side and connect to left rear air bag sensor harness connector. Install left rear air bag sensor on right side and connect to right rear air bag sensor harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. If DTC 38/B1154 and 39/B1155 are not displayed, system is operating normally at this time. Check for intermittent fault. If DTC 38/B1154 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 39/B1155 is displayed, replace right rear air bag sensor assembly.
