Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect harness connector A17. Access right front air bag sensor and disconnect harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 15 (circuit SL+, White/Red wire). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 26 (circuit SL-, Brown wire). If voltage is less than one volt in both circuits, go to next step. If either voltage is more than one volt in either circuit, go to step  7.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 15 (circuit SL+, White/Red wire). Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 26 (circuit SL-, Brown wire). If resistance in both tests is more than one megohm, go to next step. If either resistance is less than one megohm, go to step  8.
  3. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminals No. 15 (circuit SR+, White/Red wire) and terminal No. 26 (circuit SR-, Brown wire). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If is less than one megohm, go to step  9.
  4. Connect jumper wire between left front air bag sensor harness connector terminals. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 15 (circuit SL+, White/Red wire) and terminal No. 26 (circuit SL-, Brown wire). If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If is more than one ohm, go to step  10.
  5. Measure resistance across left front air bag sensor terminals. If resistance is 820 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 820 ohms, replace right front air bag sensor.
  6. Connect air bag sensor assembly connector A17. Reconnect left front air bag sensor. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve codes. See RETRIEVING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 16/B1158 or B1159 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 16/B1158 or B1159 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT .
  7. Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in White/Red wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. Measure voltage in Brown wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If voltage is less than one volt in both circuits, repair or replace harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If voltage is more than one volt in either circuit, repair or replace harness or connector between Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector and left front air bag sensor.
  8. Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Measure resistance in White/Red wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. Measure resistance in Brown wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, repair or replace harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, repair or replace harness or connector between Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector and left front air bag sensor.
  9. Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Measure resistance between White/Red and Brown wires on front air bag sensor side of Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one megohm, repair or replace harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace harness or connector between Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector and left front air bag sensor.
  10. Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Connect jumper wire between left front air bag sensor harness connector terminals. Measure resistance between White/Red and Brown wires on front air bag sensor side of Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, repair or replace harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace harness or connector between Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector and left front air bag sensor.
