Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Access air bag sensor assembly and disconnect harness connector A17. Access right front air bag sensor and disconnect harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire). If voltage is less than one volt in both circuits, go to next step. If either voltage is more than one volt in either circuit, go to step  7.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire). Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire). If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, go to next step. If either resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, go to step  8.
  3. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminals No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire) and terminal No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If is less than one megohm, go to step  9.
  4. Connect jumper wire between right front air bag sensor harness connector terminals. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A17, terminal No. 9 (circuit SR+, Black/White wire) and terminal No. 20 (circuit SR-, Brown/White wire). If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If is more than one ohm, go to step  10.
  5. Measure resistance across right front air bag sensor terminals. If resistance is 820 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 820 ohms, replace right front air bag sensor.
  6. Connect air bag sensor assembly connector A17. Reconnect right front air bag sensor. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve codes. See RETRIEVING DTCS  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 15/B1156 or B1157 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly. If DTC 15/B1156 or B1157 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  7. Disconnect right front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage in Black/White wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. Measure voltage in Brown/White wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If voltage is less than one volt in both circuits, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If voltage is more than one volt in either circuit, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
  8. Disconnect right front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Measure resistance in Black/White wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. Measure resistance in Brown/White wire between ground and front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one megohm in both circuits, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one megohm in either circuit, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
  9. Disconnect right front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Measure resistance between Black/White and Brown/White wires on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one megohm, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
  10. Disconnect right front air bag sensor Yellow 4-pin sub-harness connector, located on right cowl side panel. Connect jumper wire between Black/White and Brown/White wires on harness side of front air bag sensor connector. Measure resistance between Black/White and Brown/White wires on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
