Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Sequoia. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 33/B1141 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If DTC 33/B1141 is displayed, go to next step.
  2. Access left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly. See HEAD IMPACT/SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Ensure left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly harness connector is properly connected and secure. Reconnect connector as necessary. Go to next step.
  3. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM.
  4. Disconnect left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly connector. Connect jumper wire between left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly harness connector terminals No. 2 (circuit SSL+, Blue/White wire) and No. 4 (circuit ESL, Gray/Blue wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A19, terminals No. 10 (circuit SSL+, Blue/White wire) and No. 9 (circuit ESL, Gray/Blue wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace harness or connector between left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
  5. Connect jumper wire between left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly harness connector terminals No. 1 (circuit VUPL, Pink/Blue wire) and No. 3 (circuit SSL-, Light Green/Black wire). See Figure. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector A19, terminals No. 7 (circuit VUPL, Pink/Blue wire) and No. 12 (circuit SSL-, Light Green/Black wire). See Figure. If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace harness or connector between left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly.
  6. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly harness connector A19, terminals No. 7 (circuit VUPL, Pink/Blue wire), No. 10 (circuit SSL+, Blue/White wire) and No. 12 (circuit SSL-, Light Green/Black wire) individually. See Figure. If resistance in all tests is more than one megohm, go to next step. If any resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace harness or connector between left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly harness connector A19, terminals No. 7 (circuit VUPL, Pink/Blue wire), No. 10 (circuit SSL+, Blue/White wire), No. 12 (circuit SSL-, Light Green/Black wire) and No. 9 (circuit ESL, Gray/Blue wire) individually. See Figure. If zero volt is present in all tests, turn ignition switch to LOCK position, disconnect negative battery cable and go to next step. If more than zero volt is present in any test, repair or replace harness or connector between left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly and air bag sensor assembly. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  8. Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected. Reconnect left head impact/side air bag sensor connector and air bag sensor assembly connector A19. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 33/B1141 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If DTC 33/B1141 is displayed, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Disconnect left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly. Disconnect right head impact/side air bag sensor assembly. Connect right head impact/side air bag sensor assembly to left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 33/B1141 is not displayed, go to next step. If DTC 33/B1141 is displayed, replace air bag sensor assembly.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Connect left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly to right head impact/side air bag sensor assembly harness connector. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 2 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve DTCs. See RETRIEVING CODES  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 32/B1140 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT . If DTC 32/B1140 is displayed, replace left head impact/side air bag sensor assembly.
