Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Celica. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Reconnect negative battery cable. Ensure left front air bag sensor harness connector is disconnected.
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector C6, terminal No. 15 (White/Red wire, circuit SL+). See Figure. Measure voltage between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector C6, terminal No. 26 (Brown wire, circuit SL-). If voltage in both tests is less than one volt, turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Go to next step. If any voltage is more than one volt, go to step 8.
- Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector C6, terminal No. 15 (White/Red wire, circuit SL+). See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and air bag sensor assembly connector C6, terminal No. 26 (Brown wire, circuit SL-). If resistance in both tests is more than one megohm, go to next step. If any resistance is less than one megohm, go to step 9.
- Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector C6, terminals No. 15 (White/Red wire, circuit SL+) and terminal No. 26 (Brown wire, circuit SL-). If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is less than one megohm, go to step 10.
- Connect jumper wire between White/Red and Brown wires on air bag sensor assembly side of front air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between air bag sensor assembly connector C6, terminals No. 15 (White/Red wire, circuit SL+) and terminal No. 26 (Brown wire, circuit SL-). If resistance is less than one ohm, go to next step. If resistance is more than one ohm, go to step 11.
- Measure resistance between front air bag sensor connector terminals. If resistance is 300-1500 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 300-1500 ohms, replace front air bag sensor.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least 90 seconds. Connect air bag sensor assembly connector. Connect left front air bag sensor. Connect negative battery cable. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Wait at least 20 seconds. Retrieve codes. See RETRIEVING CODES under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTC 16/B1158 or B1159 is displayed, replace left front air bag sensor. If DTC 16/B1158 or B1159 is not displayed, system is functioning properly at this time. Check for intermittent fault. See AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT INTERMITTENT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
- Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 2-pin sub-harness connector located on instrument panel brace (left-center of instrument panel). Measure voltage between ground and White/Red wire on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and Brown wire on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If voltage is less than one volt, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If voltage is more than one volt, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
- Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 2-pin sub-harness connector located on instrument panel brace (left-center of instrument panel). Measure resistance between ground and White/Red wire on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and Brown wire on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one megohm, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one megohm, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
- Disconnect left front air bag sensor Yellow 2-pin sub-harness connector located on instrument panel brace (left-center of instrument panel). Measure resistance between White/Red and Brown wires on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector.
Connect jumper wire between White/Red and Brown wires on air bag sensor assembly side of front air bag sensor harness connector. Measure resistance between White/Red and Brown wires on front air bag sensor side of sub-harness connector. If resistance is less than one ohm, repair or replace wire harness or connector between air bag sensor assembly and sub-harness connector. If resistance is more than one ohm, repair or replace wire harness between sub-harness connector and front air bag sensor.
