Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus ES 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Warm the engine to normal operating temperature. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Connect the scan tool to the DLC3 and turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn ON the scan tool. Select the item SHIFT in the ACTIVE TEST and operate the shift solenoids on the scan tool. Operate the shift solenoid valve and set each shift position by yourself. Check each shift solenoid valve. Operate the vehicle at less than 31 MPH, while pressing the SHIFT UP and then the SHIFT DOWN buttons. If SL1 did not operate correctly, go to step  2. If SL2 did not operate correctly, go to step  3. If SL3 did not operate correctly, go to step  4. If S4 did not operate correctly, go to step  5. If SR did not operate correctly, go to step  6. If all shift solenoids operate correctly, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the oil pan. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Remove the shift solenoid valve SL1. Measure the resistance between the terminals. The specification is 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Then using a wire from battery voltage, with a 21-watt bulb, to the No. 2 terminal, ground the No. 1 terminal. See Fig 1. The solenoid should make an operating noise when voltage is applied and the resistance test should be within specification. If the shift solenoid valve operated as specified, go to step  7. If it did not operate as specified, replace the shift solenoid valve SL1.
  3. Remove the shift solenoid valve SL2. If it did not operate as specified, replace the shift solenoid valve SL2.
  4. Remove the shift solenoid valve SL3. If it did not operate as specified, replace the shift solenoid valve SL3.
  5. Remove the shift solenoid valve S4. Measure the resistance between the solenoid positive terminal and the solenoid body. The specification is 11-15 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Then using a wire from battery voltage, with a 21-watt bulb, to the No. 2 terminal and ground the No. 1 terminal. See Fig 1. The resistance test should be within specification and the solenoid should make an operating noise when voltage is applied. If the shift solenoid valve operated as specified, go to step  7. If it did not operate as specified, replace the shift solenoid valve S4.
  6. Remove the shift solenoid valve SR. If it did not operate as specified, replace the shift solenoid valve SR.
  7. Inspect the transaxle valve body for sticking valves or other malfunctions. If valve body is okay, go to next step. If a problem is found with valve body, see appropriate OVERHAUL article.
  8. Inspect the torque converter clutch for malfunction or internal damage. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
