Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus ES 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
The maximum/minimum ATF temperature value 437°F (225°C) or -40°F (-40°C) is the range of the sensor.
- Warm the engine to normal operating temperature, 176°F (80°C). Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Connect a scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition to the on position and turn the scan tool ON. Select the AT FLUID TEMP in the DATALIST and read its displayed on the scan tool. If the value approximately 176°F (80°C), replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If reading differs greatly, go to next step.
- Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect 6-pin connector (E1) located at transaxle. Measure the resistance between terminals THO and E2. The resistance should be 6.4K ohms at 50°F (10°C) and/or .2 k/ohms at 230°F (110°C). If readings are within specification, go to next step. If not, repair or replace the wiring harness and connector.
- Connect the transaxle wiring harness connector (E1). Disconnect the ECM Connector (E2). Measure the resistance between terminals THO and E2. The resistance should be 6.4K ohms at 50°F (10°C) and/or .2 k/ohms at 230°F (110°C). If resistance is not as specified, check and repair wiring harness and connector between ATF temperature sensor and ECM. If wiring harness and connector are okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
