Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Lexus ES 300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: The values given for "Normal Condition" are representative values, so a vehicle may still be normal even if its value differs from those listed here. Do not depend solely on the "Normal Condition" here when deciding whether or not the part is faulty.
  1. Warm up the engine. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Connect the scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and turn ON the scan tool. Place the gearshift lever to the "R", "D", "4", "3", 2" and "L" positions. Select the REVERSE, 5th/DRIVE, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and LOW in the DATA LIST and read its value displayed on the scan tool. See Fig 1. If all parameters are within specification, replace ECM. If not, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect the PNP switch connector. Check continuity between each terminal shown in figure, while moving gearshift lever to each position. See Fig 2. If continuity is within specification, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch.
  3. Connect the PNP switch connector. Disconnect the transaxle control switch connector. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and check for continuity when the gearshift lever is moved through the specified positions. See Fig 3. If readings are not within specifications, replace the shift lock control assembly. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS article. If readings are within specifications, go to next step.
  4. Connect the transaxle control switch connector. Disconnect the ECM connector. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Measure voltage between terminal E1 and terminals "P", "R", "N", "D", "4", "3", "2" and "L" of ECM harness connector when the gearshift lever is moved through the specified positions. See Fig 4. If readings are within specifications, replace ECM. If not, repair or replace wiring harness and connector.
