Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota Tundra, 2002 Toyota Tacoma, 2002 Toyota Sequoia, 2002 Toyota 4Runner, and 2001 Toyota Tundra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disconnect transmission solenoid connector. See Figure. Using DVOM, measure resistance between terminals SLT+ and SLT- on transmission solenoid connector. See Figure. If resistance is 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C), go to next step. If resistance is not 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C), replace SLT solenoid.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove transmission oil pan. See appropriate SERVICING article. Disconnect solenoid connector. Remove SLT solenoid. Connect a jumper wire with an 8-10 watt bulb in series between battery positive terminal and SLT solenoid terminal No. 1. Connect another jumper wire between battery negative terminal and terminal No. 2. See Fig 1.
- Solenoid plunger should move away from solenoid electrical connector. Remove jumper wire from solenoid terminal No. 2. Solenoid plunger should move back toward solenoid electrical connector. If solenoid plunger responds properly, go to next step. If solenoid plunger does not respond, replace SLT solenoid and retest.
- If solenoid plunger responds properly, inspect transmission wiring harness. Repair as needed. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
