Description & Operation: Introduction

Automatic transmission for all models is electronically controlled. The A-340E is an electronically controlled transmission without a transfer case. The A-340F is an electronically controlled transmission with a mechanical or electronically controlled transfer case, depending on model. On all models, transmission shifting and torque converter clutch lock-up are controlled by an Engine Control Module (ECM).

ECM receives information from various input devices and uses this information to control solenoids on transmission valve body for transmission shifting, torque converter clutch lock-up and line pressure (Sequoia and Tundra with 4.7L). Shift changes are performed by solenoids No. 1 and 2. Torque converter clutch lock-up is performed by SL solenoid.

Accumulator control valve assists in smooth shifting. SLT solenoid is used to modulate and generate line pressure according to accelerator pedal effort or engine output. Solenoids are mounted on transmission valve body. See Figure-Figure .

A pattern select switch is located on left side of instrument panel on Tacoma or on right side of instrument panel on 4Runner. Tundra and Sequoia models do not use a pattern select switch. Pattern select switch contains a POWER (PWR) and a NORMAL (NORM) operating position. When pattern select switch is depressed (PWR position), transmission upshifts and downshifts will occur at a higher vehicle speed than with pattern select switch released. An indicator light on instrument panel indicates pattern select switch is depressed (PWR position).

On all models, an overdrive (O/D) main switch is mounted on gearshift lever. See Figure-Figure . When O/D main switch is depressed to ON position, transmission will shift into 4th gear when gearshift lever is in "D" position, and O/D OFF light on instrument panel will go off. When O/D main switch is released to OFF position, transmission will shift into 3rd gear, and O/D OFF light will illuminate.

On all models, transmission is equipped with a shift lock and key lock system. Shift lock system prevents gearshift lever from being moved from Park unless brake pedal is depressed. In case of a malfunction, gearshift lever can be released by depressing shift lock override button, located near gearshift lever. Key lock system prevents ignition key from being moved from ACC to LOCK position on ignition switch unless gearshift lever is in Park.
