Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Before retrieving DTCs, ensure sufficient battery voltage exists for proper self-diagnosis system operation. Ensure proper operation of MIL light. MIL will illuminate for all DTCs.
NOTE: For additional engine performance or other system related DTCs present that are not listed in DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS , see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector No. 3 (DLC3). DLC3 is located at lower left corner of instrument panel. See Fig 2.
  2. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Turn on scan tool. Retrieve any DTCs stored in memory following scan tool instructions. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  3. DTCs recorded may not have illuminated MIL. When certain malfunctions or DTCs initially occur, they will be temporarily stored in ECM memory, but MIL will not illuminate.
  4. Second time malfunction or DTC is detected, MIL will illuminate, provided ignition is turned off and then back on after malfunction or DTC was first detected. This process is referred to as 2 trip detection logic and only applies to most DTCs.
  5. Record freeze-frame data. If using Lexus/Toyota scan tool, ensure tool is in NORMAL mode. CHECK MODE will erase all codes.
