Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Measure voltage between terminal TFN of appropriate ECM harness connector and body ground when the transfer shift lever is moved to "N" position. See Figure and Figure . Voltage should be less than 1.5 volts. When the transfer shift lever is moved to any other position, the reading should be between 9-14 volts. If both readings are as specified, problem is intermittent. See SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If reading is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Remove the transfer indicator switch (NEUTRAL switch) from rear of transmission. Using an ohmmeter, test for continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2, while pushing the ball at the end of the switch. See Figure. There should be continuity when the ball is pushed, and no continuity when the ball is released. If readings are as specified, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If readings are not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Check the wiring harness and connector for loose terminals, corrosion, cut or broken wires or shorted wiring. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
