Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Measure voltage between terminal L4 of appropriate ECM harness connector and ground. Move the transfer shift lever to the LOW position. The voltage should be between 9-14 volts. When not in LOW position, the voltage should be less than 1.5 volts. If the voltage readings are as specified, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Remove the indicator switch (LOW switch) from rear of transmission. Using an ohmmeter, test for continuity between terminals No. 1 and 2, while pushing the ball at the end of the switch. See Fig 1. There should be continuity when the ball is pushed in, and no continuity when the ball is released. If readings are as specified, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If readings are not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Check the wiring harness and connector for loose terminals, corrosion, cut or broken wires or shorted wiring. If wiring harness is okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
