Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: If not using a Lexus/Toyota scan tool, start diagnosis at step  2.
  1. Connect a Lexus/Toyota scan tool to the DLC3 and turn scan tool ON. Move the gearshift lever through all the gear positions while monitoring the PNP, REVERSE, 2ND and LOW signals on the scan tool. Check to see if the signals are as specified. See Fig 1. If so, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, go to step  3.
  2. Access ECM by removing glove compartment. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Using DVOM, backprobe appropriate ECM connector. Measure voltage at terminals NSW, R", "D", "2" and "L" of ECM harness connector between terminal and body ground with gearshift lever in each position. See Fig 2. If all voltages are correct, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, go to next step.
  3. Remove the PNP switch connector. Check continuity between specified terminals. See Fig 3. If continuity is as specified, repair or replace harness and connector between battery and PNP switch or PNP switch and ECM. If continuity is not as specified, replace the PNP switch.
