Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION:
If not using the Lexus/Toyota scan tool, start diagnosis with step 2.
- Connect the Lexus/Toyota scan tool to the DLC3. Turn ON the scan tool. Drive vehicle and read speed value. Does vehicle speed match the scan tool reading? If so, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If speed does not match, go to step 3.
- Ensure ignition is off. Access ECM by removing glove compartment. See Figure. Disconnect appropriate ECM harness connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminal SP2+ and SP2- at ECM connector. See Figure and Figure . Resistance should be 560-680 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
- Remove the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor from transmission. Measure resistance between sensor terminals. Resistance should be 560-680 ohms. If resistance at the No. 2 vehicle speed sensor is not as specified, replace sensor. If resistance is as specified, check and repair wiring harness and connector between sensor and ECM. Check voltage between sensor terminals when a magnet is put close to tip of speed sensor. See Figure. If a low intermittent voltage is generated, sensor is okay. If no voltage is generated, replace speed sensor.
