Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Access ECM by removing glove compartment. Disconnect appropriate ECM harness connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ECM harness connector terminal S1 and/or S2 and ground. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 11-15 ohms, replace ECM and retest. If resistance is not within specification, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect transmission solenoid wiring harness connector (next to PNP switch) at transmission. Check for a short or open condition between terminals S1 and/or S2 of transmission harness connector and corresponding terminal of ECM harness connector. See Figure, Figure and Figure . If no short or open condition was found for both circuits, go to next step. If a short or an open was found, repair or replace wiring harness as needed.
  3. Raise and support vehicle. Remove oil pan. See appropriate SERVICING article. Measure resistance between solenoid connector and ground. It should be 11-15 ohms. See Fig 1. Connect battery voltage to the positive lead of solenoid and ground the solenoid body. The solenoid should make a operating noise. See Fig 1.

If both checks were okay, replace the transmission wiring harness. If the checks were not okay, replace the solenoid valve.
