Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: If not using the Lexus/Toyota scan tool, start diagnosis at step  2.
  1. Connect the Lexus/Toyota scan tool to the DLC3. Start the engine, and leave gearshift lever in Park. Turn ON the scan tool. Check the O/D direct clutch speed reading at idle. If the reading is 650-750 RPM, go to next step. If not within specification, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Ensure ignition is off. Access ECM by removing glove compartment. See Figure. Disconnect appropriate ECM harness connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals NCO+ and NCO- at ECM connector. See Figure and Figure . Resistance should be 560-680 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is as specified, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Remove O/D direct clutch speed sensor from transmission. Measure resistance between sensor terminals. Resistance should be 560-680 ohms. If resistance at O/D direct clutch speed sensor is not as specified, replace sensor. If resistance is as specified, check and repair circuits between sensor and ECM. Check voltage between sensor terminals when a magnet is put close to tip of speed sensor. See Fig 1. If a low intermittent voltage is generated, sensor is okay. If no voltage is generated, replace speed sensor.
