Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect ATF temperature sensor connector, located on right side of transmission. Remove sensor from elbow. Connect ohmmeter leads between sensor terminals.
- Submerge sensor in container of water. See Fig 1. Heat water while measuring sensor resistance. At 68°F (20°C), sensor resistance should be about 12.1 k/ohms. At 230°F (110°C), sensor resistance should be about 780 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace sensor. Tighten sensor to 133 INCH lbs. (15 N.m). If resistance is as specified, inspect and repair wiring harness circuits between sensor and ECM. If circuits are okay, replace ECM and retest. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
