Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser, 2002 Lexus LX 470, 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser, and 2001 Lexus LX 470. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. To check the 2nd gear start switch, push the switch to the ON position. The indicator should illuminate. Push the 2nd gear start switch again or push the PWR side of the 2nd gear start switch. The indicator should turn off. If switch operates as described, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If switch does not operate as described, go to next step.
- Check the 2nd gear indicator bulb. If okay, go to next step. If defective, replace bulb.
- Disconnect the pattern select switch connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between terminals No. 2 and 3 of pattern select switch connector when 2nd gear start switch is set to ON and OFF positions. See Figure. There should be continuity when the 2nd gear start switch is pressed continuously and no continuity when released. If readings are within specification, go to next step. If not within specification, replace 2nd gear start switch.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position. Disconnect the appropriate ECM harness connector. Check voltage between terminal SNWI of ECM connector and ground when the 2nd gear start switch is turned ON and OFF. When ON, voltage should read less than 1.5 volts, and when OFF, voltage should read between 7.5 and 14 volts. Check the voltage between ground and terminal SNWL. Voltage should read 7.5-14 volts. If all readings are within specifications, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not within specifications, repair or replace transmission wiring harness and connector.
