1ST & Reverse Brake Assembly: Reassembly

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 22 other vehicles, including the 2005 Lexus SC 430, 2005 Lexus IS 300, 2005 Lexus GS 430, 2005 Lexus GS 300, and 2004 Lexus SC 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Coat replacement "O" rings with ATF. Install "O" rings on brake piston and reaction sleeve. Install No. 1 brake piston to reaction sleeve. Install reaction sleeve and brake piston into transmission case. See Fig 1.
  2. To complete reassembly, reverse disassembly procedure. Ensure piston return spring snap ring is fully seated and ring ends do not align with claw area on spring retainer of piston return spring.
  3. Install plates and discs, starting with plate. Install flange with flat end facing toward disc. Install snap ring. Ensure end of snap ring is not aligned with cut-out portion of case. Apply 57-114 psi (4-8 kg/cm2 ) to 1st and reverse brake. See Fig 2. Piston stroke should be smooth. If piston does not operate correctly, check for incorrectly assembled components. Recheck piston stroke.
  4. Using feeler gauge, measure clutch pack clearance between snap ring and flange. See Fig 5. Clearance for V8 models should be .024-.035" (.61-.90 mm) . Clearance for 6-cyl. models should be 020-.031" (.50-.80 mm). If clearance is not within specification, install correct bottom plate (next to piston). Plates are available in thicknesses of .071" (1.8 mm) to .118" (3.0 mm) in .004" (.10 mm) increments.
