Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON and press the scan tool main switch ON. Shift the gearshift lever into the "P", "R", "N", "D", "2" and "L" positions, and read the signal of PNP switch, Reverse, Drive, 2nd and Low on the scan tool. See Figure. If values are as specified, attempt to diagnose by symptom. If values are different than specified, go to next step.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove the PNP switch. Check the continuity between appropriate terminals when the shift lever is moved into each position. See Fig 1. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If not, replace PNP switch.
  3. Check harness and connector between battery and PNP switch, and PNP switch and ECM. If wiring problem was found, repair or replace as necessary. If no problem was found, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
