Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the scan tool. Shift the gearshift lever to the "P", "R", "N", "D", "2" and "L" ranges, and monitor the NSW, Reverse, Drive, 2nd and Low signals on the scan tool. See Fig 1. If values are not as specified, go to next step. If the scan tool values are as specified, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  2. Remove the PNP switch. Check continuity between appropriate terminals when the gearshift lever is moved to each range. See Fig 2. If tests show continuity, go to next step. If no continuity is found, replace PNP switch.
  3. Connect the PNP switch connector. Disconnect the appropriate ECM connector. Turn the ignition switch ON and measure the voltage between terminals "P", "R", "N", "D", "2", and "L" and the E1 terminal of ECM when the gearshift lever is shifted to each gear position. See Fig 3. If PNP switch values do not match figure, repair or replace the harness and connector. If values are okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
