Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the transmission wire connector from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between the terminal SLT+ and SLT-. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between shift solenoid SLT terminals. If resistance is 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C), go to next step. If resistance is not 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C), go to step  3.
  2. Connect the transaxle wiring harness connector. Disconnect the appropriate ECM connector. Measure the resistance between terminals (STL+) and (STL-) of ECM connector. Specification is 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If reading is not within specification, repair or replace wiring harness and connector between shift solenoid SLT and ECM. If wiring harness and connector are okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  3. Remove the line pressure control solenoid (SLT). Applying 71 psi or (5.0 kg/cm2 ) of compressed air, check that the solenoid valve does not leak air. If it does, replace it. Apply battery voltage to the line pressure control solenoid (SLT). The valve should open. If it does not, replace the line pressure control solenoid (SLT).
