Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the speed sensor connector from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between terminals of transaxle revolution (NC) sensor. See Figure. On TOYOTA made sensors, resistance is between 500-620 ohms at 68°F (20°C). On AISIN made sensors, resistance is between 560-680 at 68°F (20°C). If readings are not within specifications, replace speed sensor. If readings are within specification, go to next step.
  2. Connect the speed sensor connector. Disconnect the appropriate ECM connector. Measure the resistance between terminal (NC+) and (NC-). On TOYOTA made sensors, resistance is between 500-620 ohms at 68°F (20°C). On AISIN made sensors, resistance is between 560-680 at 68°F (20°C). If readings are not within specifications, repair or replace wiring harness or connector. If readings are within specification, replace ECM.
