Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the speed sensor connector from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between terminals of NT revolution sensor. See Figure. On TOYOTA made sensors, resistance is between 500-620 ohms at 68°F (20°C). On AISIN made sensors, resistance is between 560-680 at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is within specification, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not go to next step.
  2. Remove the input turbine speed sensor from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between terminals No. 1 and 2 of the speed sensor. On TOYOTA made sensors, resistance is between 500-620 ohms at 68°F (20°C). On AISIN made sensors, resistance is between 560-680 at 68°F (20°C). If readings are within specifications, check and repair wiring harness and connector. If not, go to next step.
  3. Check the voltage between terminals No. 1 and 2 of the speed sensor when a magnet is put close to the front end of the speed sensor then taken away quickly. See Figure. Voltage is generated intermittently. If no voltage is indicated, replace the input turbine speed sensor.
