Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Access ECM. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect ECM connector E6. Disconnect 10-pin transaxle connector, located above PNP switch on side of transaxle. See Figure. Using a DVOM, check circuit continuity between ECM harness connector E6 terminal No. 6 (DSL) and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 3. See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, check and repair wiring harness or connector as needed.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove transaxle oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Disconnect shift solenoid (DSL) connector. See Figure. Remove shift solenoid (DSL). Using a DVOM, measure resistance between shift solenoid (DSL) body and shift solenoid (DSL) connector terminal. Resistance should be 11-13 ohms. If resistance is not as specified, replace shift solenoid (DSL). If resistance is as specified, connect jumper wire from positive battery terminal to shift solenoid (DSL) connector terminal and another jumper wire from negative battery terminal to shift solenoid (DSL) body. If shift solenoid (DSL) does not operate, replace shift solenoid (DSL). If shift solenoid (DSL) operates, check and repair wiring harness or connector as necessary.
