Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove transaxle oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Disconnect the solenoid connector from the transaxle. Measure resistance between the terminal No. 3 and the body ground. See Figure. Resistance should be between 11-13 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is within specifications, go to next step. If not, go to step  3.
  2. Connect the transaxle wire connector. Disconnect the appropriate ECM connector. Measure the resistance between terminal (DSL) and E1. Resistance should be between 11-13 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is within specifications, go to next step. If not, repair or replace transaxle wiring harness.
  3. Remove the shift solenoid valve (DSL). Measure the resistance between the shift solenoid valve terminal and the solenoid body. Resistance should be between 11-13 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is within specifications, connect battery voltage to the terminal of solenoid connector and ground the solenoid body. The (SL) solenoid valve should make an operational noise. If solenoid does not make noise, replace the solenoid. If a noise is heard, repair or replace wiring harness.
