Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Access ECM. See Figure or Figure . Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect ECM connector E4. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ECM harness connector E4 terminals No. 8 (SL2+) and No. 20 (SL2-). See PIN VOLTAGE TESTS . Resistance should be 5.1-5.5 ohms. If resistance is as specified, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  2. Remove oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Check the harness and connector between terminal (SL1+) or (SL1-) of the ECM and terminal (SL1+) or (SL1-) of the solenoid connector. Check the harness and connector between terminal (SL2+) or (SL2-) of the ECM and terminal (SL2+) or (SL2-) of the solenoid connector. Check the harness and connector between terminal (S4) of the ECM and terminal (S4) of the solenoid connector. If no short or open is found, go to next step. If a short or open is found, repair or replace harness and connector.
  3. Check shift solenoids (SL1) (SL2) OR (S4) for malfunction. See SHIFT SOLENOIDS SL1, SL2 & S4  under COMPONENT TESTS. Replace shift solenoid as necessary. If shift solenoids are okay, check and repair affected circuit in wiring harness between ECM and transaxle.
