Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disconnect the solenoid connector from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between terminal No. 5 (SL1+) and No. 10 (SL1-). See Fig 1. If the resistance is not between 5.0-5.6 ohms at approximately 68°F (20°C), go to step 3. Measure the resistance between terminal No. 4 (SL2+) and 9 (SL2-). If the resistance is not between 5.1-5.5 ohms at approximately 68°F (20°C), go to step 4. Measure resistance between terminal No. 8 (S4) and body ground. If the resistance is not between 11-15 ohms at approximately 68°F (20°C), go to step 5. If these measurements are within specification, go to next step.
- Connect the solenoid connector to the transaxle. Disconnect the connector from the ECM. Measure the resistance between the following terminals at ECM:
- (SL1+) to (SL1-) should be 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C)
- (SL2+) to (SL2-) should be 5.1-5.5 ohms at 68°F (20°C)
- (S4) to ground should be 11-15 ohms at 68°F (20°C)
If readings are within specifications, check all connections at ECM. If okay, replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, repair or replace transaxle-to-ECM harness and connector.
- Remove oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Remove the shift solenoid valve (SL1). Measure the resistance between the terminals. Resistance should be between 5.0-5.6 ohms at 68°F (20°C). If resistance is within specification, repair or replace transaxle wire. If not, replace shift solenoid valve (SL1).
- Remove oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Remove the shift solenoid valve (SL2). Measure the resistance between the terminals. Resistance should be between 5.1-5.5 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Connect the positive lead with a 21 watt bulb to terminal No. 2 and the negative lead to terminal SL1 of the solenoid valve connector, then check the movement of the valve. If the valve makes an operating noise, go to next step. If no noise is heard, or resistance is not as specified, replace shift solenoid (SL2).
- Remove oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Remove the shift solenoid valve (S4). Measure the resistance between the solenoid connector and the solenoid body. Resistance should be between 11-15 ohms at 68°F (20°C). Connect battery voltage to lead to the terminal of solenoid connector, and place a grounded lead to the solenoid body. If the solenoid makes an operating noise repair or replace wiring harness or connector. If no noise is heard, or resistance is not as specified, replace shift solenoid (S4).
