Circuit Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Shifting from 1st to O/D is performed in combination with ON and OFF operation of the shift solenoid valves (SL1) and (SL2) which is controlled by the ECM. If an open or short circuit occurs in either of the shift solenoid valves, the ECM controls the remaining normal shift solenoid valve to allow the vehicle to be operated smoothly (fail safe function). Possible causes are:

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect 10-pin transaxle connector, located above PNP switch on side of transaxle. See Figure. Remove transaxle oil pan. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article. Disconnect the transaxle 10 Pin wiring connector from the transaxle. Measure the resistance between terminals THO and E2. If measurements coincide with ATF TEMPERATURE , go to next step. If not, repair or replace transaxle wiring or connector.
  2. Connect the transaxle wiring connector to transaxle. Disconnect the appropriate ECM connector and measure the resistance between terminals THO and E2. If measurements coincide with ATF TEMPERATURE , go to next step. If not, repair or replace transaxle wiring or connector.
  3. Replace ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
