Diagnostic Procedure

- Test drive vehicle and check operation of speedometer. If speedometer is not operating correctly, repair speedometer as necessary. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If speedometer is operating correctly, go to next step.
- Access ECM. See Figure or Figure . Turn ignition switch to the OFF position. Disconnect appropriate ECM connector. See Figure or Figure . Using a DVOM, check continuity between ground and ECM harness connector E7, terminal No. 23 (SPD) for RAV4, or connector E6 terminal No. 22 (SPD) on Highlander. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in harness or connector as needed.
- On Highlander, disconnect the ECM harness connector E6, terminal No. 22 (SPD). If voltage is not 9-14 volts, check for open in wiring harness or connector between ECM and combination meter. Repair as necessary. If wiring harness and connector are okay, retrieve DTCs from ECM. If DTC P0500 is still set, replace ECM and retest system. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If system is still malfunctioning, check for transaxle mechanical fault. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
- On RAV4, raise vehicle on hoist. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Using a DVOM, measure voltage between ground and ECM harness connector E7, terminal No. 23 (SPD), while rotating the front wheel slowly. Voltage should be generated intermittently. If no voltage is generated, check connector or harness. If okay, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
