WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition switch to the ON position. Observe Overdrive OFF (O/D OFF) indicator while pressing O/D main switch to ON position. O/D OFF indicator should illuminate. Observe O/D OFF indicator and press O/D main switch again. O/D main switch should be in OFF position and O/D OFF indicator should go off. If O/D OFF indicator does not operate as specified, go to next step. If O/D OFF indicator operates as specified, O/D main switch and O/D OFF indicator are okay.
  2. Check and repair instrument panel as necessary. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If instrument panel is operating correctly, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect electrical connector from O/D main switch, located on gearshift lever. Using a DVOM, check for continuity between O/D main switch connector terminals No. 2 and No. 4 with switch released. Continuity should not exist with switch released. Press and hold O/D main switch and check continuity again. Continuity should exist. If both continuity checks are as specified, switch is okay. If not, replace switch.
