Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition switch ON. Check the O/D OFF indicator light when the O/D main switch is pressed to ON position. It should light up. Check the O/D OFF indicator light when the O/D main switch is pressed once again. It should turn OFF. If system operates as described, check and replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If not, go to next step.
  2. Check combination meter (instrument cluster) for failure or poor connections. If combination meter is found to be at fault, replace combination meter. If no problem was found, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect O/D main switch connector. Using an ohmmeter, check the continuity between terminals No. 1 and No. 3 of the O/D main switch connector. See Fig 1. Press the switch while observing the ohmmeter. There should be continuity. Release the switch while watching the ohmmeter. There should be no continuity. If results are as specified, go to next step. If not, replace O/D main switch.
  4. Turn the ignition switch ON. Check the voltage between terminal ODMS of the ECM connector E8 and ground when the O/D main switch is toggled from ON to OFF. When O/D main switch is ON voltage should be less than one volt. Release O/D main switch. Voltage should be 10-14 volts. If readings are as specified, check and replace ECM. If readings are not as specified, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect the ECM connector E8. Turn the ignition ON. Measure the voltage between terminal ODLP of the ECM connector (E8) and ground. If the measured voltage is between 7.5-14 volts, check and replace ECM. If the measured voltage is not between 7.5-14 volts, replace the wiring harness between the combination meter and the ECM.
