Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota RAV4, 2002 Toyota Highlander, 2001 Toyota RAV4, and 2001 Toyota Highlander. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the O/D main switch connector. Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between terminals No. 3 and No. 6 of the O/D main switch while pressing and releasing the O/D main switch. While pressed, the switch should show continuity, and while released, the switch should not show continuity. If the results were as specified, go to next step. If the results were not as specified, replace the O/D main switch.
  2. Connect the connector of transmission control switch. Check continuity between terminal ODMS and E1 of ECM. While pressed, the switch should show continuity, and while released, the switch should not show continuity. If the results were not as specified, repair or replace wiring harness and connector. If the results were as specified, replace the ECM. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
