Manual Shift Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: For circuit reference, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  and/or CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  .
NOTE: Perform manual shift test if no DTCs exist. Manual shift test determines if problem area is an electrical circuit or a mechanical transaxle problem. Disconnecting electrical connector from transaxle may set a DTC. Clear DTCs from ECM memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

With ignition off, Disconnect the electrical connector for solenoids from transaxle. Road test vehicle with gearshift lever in "D", "2" and "L" position. See GEAR APPLICATION  table. If gear attained is as specified for gearshift lever position, diagnose symptom. See CIRCUIT TESTS . If gear attained is not as specified for gearshift lever position, a mechanical transaxle problem exists. See appropriate OVERHAUL article.
