Line Pressure Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure ATF is at operating temperature of 122-176°F (50-80°C). Raise and support vehicle. Remove appropriate transaxle case plug and install pressure gauge. See Fig 1. Lower vehicle and block all wheels.
  2. Fully apply parking brake. Start the engine and idle. Apply brakes. Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Measure line pressure at idle. Press accelerator fully. Quickly note highest line pressure when stall speed is reached. Move gearshift lever to "R" position and repeat procedure.
  3. Place gearshift lever in "D" position. Measure line pressure at idle. Press accelerator fully. Quickly note highest line pressure when stall speed is reached.
  4. On all models, line pressure should be within specification. See HYDRAULIC PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS . If line pressure is not as specified, check for the following conditions:
    • If line pressure is high in all positions, check throttle cable adjustment, or for defective throttle valve or regulator valve.
    • If line pressure is low in all positions, check throttle cable adjustment, or for defective oil pump, throttle valve, regulator valve, oil pump or O/D direct clutch.
    • If line pressure is low in "D" position only, check "D" position circuit for leaking pressure, or for defective forward clutch.
    • If line pressure is low in "R" position only, check "R" position circuit for leaking pressure, or for defective 1st and reverse brake.
