Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Remove SLN solenoid from transaxle. Disconnect the SLN solenoid 2-pin connector. Using DVOM, measure the resistance between SLN solenoid terminals. If resistance is 5.1-5.5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 5.1-5.5 ohms, replace SLN solenoid.
  2. Connect positive lead with 8-10 watt bulb from battery to terminal No. 1 of solenoid connector (component side). Connect negative lead to terminal No. 2 of solenoid connector. See Fig 1. With power supplied to solenoid, ensure solenoid valve moves outward. With power disconnected, ensure solenoid valve moves inward. If SLN solenoid does not operate as described, replace faulty SLN solenoid. If SLN solenoid operates as described, check and repair circuits between battery, SLN solenoid and ECM. If circuits are okay, replace ECM and retest. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
