Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Access the ECM. See Figure. Disconnect the ECM 31-pin connector E4. Using DVOM, measure the resistance between the ECM harness connector E4 terminals No. 23 and 24. See Figure. If resistance is 560-680 ohms, replace ECM and retest. See appropriate REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If resistance is not 560-680 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Remove direct clutch speed sensor from transaxle. Using DVOM, measure the resistance between direct clutch speed sensor terminals. If resistance is not 560-680 ohms, replace direct clutch speed sensor. If resistance is 560-680 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Using DVOM, measure voltage between direct clutch speed sensor terminals with magnet placed close to tip of direct clutch speed sensor. See Fig 1. If low intermittent voltage is generated, check and repair circuits between direct clutch speed sensor and ECM. If no voltage is generated, replace direct clutch speed sensor.
