Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure ignition is in the OFF position. Access the ECM. See Figure. Disconnect the ECM 31-pin connector E4 and 17-pin connector E6. Using DVOM, measure the resistance between ground and the ECM harness connector E4 terminal No. 7 (shift solenoid No. 1). Also, measure the resistance between ground and the ECM harness connector E6 terminal No. 1 (shift solenoid No. 2). See Figure. If either resistance is not 11-15 ohms, go to next step. If both resistances are 11-15 ohms, replace ECM and retest.
  2. Disconnect the transaxle harness 6-pin connector E1 (next to PNP switch). Using DVOM, measure the resistance of Pink wire between the ECM harness connector E4 terminal No. 7 and transaxle harness connector E1 terminal No. 3. Also, measure the resistance of Green/Yellow wire between the ECM harness connector E6 terminal No. 8 and transaxle harness connector E1 terminal No. 6. See Fig 1 and Figure . If resistance is zero ohms, go to next step. If resistance is more than zero ohms, repair open in affected circuit between transaxle and ECM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  3. Remove the suspect shift solenoid. Using DVOM, measure the resistance between the shift solenoid connector terminal and solenoid case. If resistance is 11-15 ohms, check and repair internal transaxle harness for open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is not 11-15 ohms, replace the faulty shift solenoid.
