Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Avalon and 2001 Toyota Avalon. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Test drive vehicle and determine if speedometer is functioning properly. If speedometer is okay, go to next step. If speedometer is not functioning, check ABS speed sensor or vehicle speed sensor circuit between ABS ECU and instrument cluster for malfunction. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  2. Turn the ignition to the OFF position. Access the ECM. See Figure. Disconnect the ECM 28-pin connector E7. Check for continuity between the ECM harness connector E7 terminal No. 22 and ground. See Figure. If continuity exists, check and repair circuit for short to ground. If continuity does not exist, go to next step.
  3. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ECM connector E7 terminal No. 22 and ground. If voltage is not 9-14 volts, check and repair open in circuit between ECM and junction block No. 3 located behind left kick panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is 9-14 volts, check ECM power and ground circuits. If circuits are okay, substitute ECM with known-good unit. If problem is still present, repair transaxle internal malfunction.
