Inspection Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Lexus ES 330. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

HINT:

  1. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (RESISTANCE) 
    1. Disconnect the C2 crankshaft position sensor connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2.

      Standard:

      NOTE: In the above section, the terms "cold" and "hot" refer to the temperature of the coils. "Cold" means approximately -10°C to 50°C (14°F to 122°F). "Hot" means approximately 50°C to 100°C (122°F to 212°F).
    3. Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.

    NG: REPLACE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (See  CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR (3MZ-FE)  ) 

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the C2 crankshaft position sensor connector.
    2. Disconnect the E8 ECM connector.
    3. Check the resistance between the wire harness side connectors.

      Standard (Check for open):

      Standard (Check for short):

    4. Reconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector.
    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 

  3. CHECK SENSOR INSTALLATION (CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR) 

    NG: TIGHTEN SENSOR 

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 

  4. CHECK CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY 
    1. Check the teeth of the crankshaft timing pulley.

    NG: REPLACE CRANKSHAFT TIMING PULLEY 

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP. 

    REPLACE ECM (See  ECM (3MZ-FE)  )
