Removal (Camry & Highlander)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota Tundra, 2002 Toyota Tacoma, 2002 Toyota Sienna, 2002 Toyota Sequoia, and 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Air intake chamber must be removed for access to fuel rails and fuel injectors. See Figure and Figure . Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
Remove suspension upper brace. Suspension upper brace fits between strut towers and is bolted to top of each strut tower. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner hose and "V" bank cover. See Figure and Figure .
Remove battery. On Camry, disconnect control cables, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses at throttle body. On Highlander, disconnect control cables, electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses at each throttle body. On all models, disconnect electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from vacuum switching valves on emission control valve set located on side of air intake chamber. See Figure and Figure .
Remove nuts and disconnect power steering pressure tube (if equipped) from engine hanger. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors, ground straps and vacuum hoses for removal of air intake chamber. Disconnect PCV hose from PCV valve on rear cylinder head.
On Camry, remove bolts, engine hanger and air intake chamber support brace from air intake chamber. Remove nuts, EGR pipe and gaskets. See Figure. On Highlander, remove bolts, engine hanger and throttle body bracket. See Figure. On all models, remove bolts/nuts, air intake chamber and gasket. See Figure and Figure .
Remove fuel pulsation damper and No. 1 fuel pipe-to-fuel rail bolt with gaskets and separate No. 1 fuel pipe from rear of fuel rails. See Fig 1. Fuel pulsation damper may also be referred to as fuel pressure pulsation damper.

Note location of electrical connectors on fuel injectors for installation reference. Disconnect electrical connectors at fuel injectors. Remove No. 1 fuel pipe-to-intake manifold clamp bolt at rear of intake manifold.

CAUTION: When removing fuel rails, use care not to allow fuel injectors to fall from fuel rails.

Remove fuel rail-to-intake manifold bolts. Remove each fuel rail with fuel injectors as an assembly from intake manifold by pulling upward evenly at each end of fuel rail. Note direction of spacer installation on intake manifold for installation reference. Remove spacers from intake manifold. Remove fuel injectors from fuel rail. Remove "O" ring(s), insulator and grommet from fuel injector.
