Fuel Rails & Fuel Injectors: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota Tundra, 2002 Toyota Tacoma, 2002 Toyota Sienna, 2002 Toyota Sequoia, and 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. To install, reverse removal procedure using NEW grommets, insulators, "O" rings and gaskets. Coat "O" rings with gasoline before installing "O" rings on fuel injector. Coat fuel rail-to-fuel injector "O" ring area with gasoline before installing fuel injector on fuel rail.
  2. Use twisting motion when installing fuel injector on fuel rail. Coat intake manifold-to-fuel injector "O" ring area with gasoline before installing fuel injectors and fuel rails. Ensure electrical connector on each fuel injector is facing toward outside of fuel rail.
  3. Ensure spacers are installed on intake manifold. Install fuel rails with fuel injectors on intake manifold with all fuel rail-to-intake manifold bolts and fuel line-to-intake manifold clamp bolt loosely installed.
  4. Ensure fuel injectors rotate smoothly. If fuel injectors do not rotate smoothly, check for improper "O" ring installation and replace "O" ring on fuel injector.
  5. Ensure electrical connector on each fuel injector is facing toward outside of fuel rail. Tighten fuel rail-to-intake manifold bolts to specification and then tighten fuel line-to-intake manifold clamp bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  6. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill cooling system.
  7. Apply light coat of engine oil on tip of pipe on fuel filter to allow for ease of disconnect fitting and No. 1 fuel pipe installation. Using NEW retainer, install No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel filter until "click" sound is heard. DO NOT reuse old retainer when installing No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel filter. Always use a NEW retainer. Pull on No. 1 fuel pipe to ensure fuel pipe is properly locked on fuel filter.
  8. Reinstall fuel pipe clamp until "click" sound is heard. Pull upward on fuel pipe clamp to ensure fuel pipe clamp is securely locked on fuel filter.
  9. Install negative battery cable. Operate fuel pump and check for fuel leaks. See FUEL PUMP OPERATION under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - V6 & V8 article.
