Knock Sensor: Installation
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota Tundra, 2002 Toyota Tacoma, 2002 Toyota Sienna, 2002 Toyota Sequoia, and 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Install and tighten knock sensor(s) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW gaskets. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure intake manifold bolts/nuts are tightened to specification in sequence. See Fig 6. Ensure coolant housing bolts/nuts are retightened to specification once intake manifold is installed and bolts/nuts are tightened to specification. On Avalon and Camry Solara, go to next step. On Camry and Highlander, go to step 6.
- On Avalon and Camry Solara, apply light coat of engine oil on tip of pipe on fuel filter to allow for ease of disconnect fitting and No. 1 fuel pipe installation. Using NEW retainer, install No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel filter until "click" sound is heard. DO NOT reuse old retainer when installing No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel filter. Always use a NEW retainer. Pull on No. 1 fuel pipe to ensure fuel pipe is properly locked on fuel filter.
- Reinstall fuel pipe clamp until "click" sound is heard. Pull upward on fuel pipe clamp to ensure fuel pipe clamp is securely locked on fuel filter. go to step 7.
- On Camry and Highlander, install No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel pipe fitting. Pull on No. 1 fuel pipe to ensure fuel pipe is properly locked on fuel pipe fitting. Reinstall fuel pipe clamp. Go to next step.
- On all models, fill cooling system. Install negative battery cable. Operate fuel pump and check for fuel leaks. See FUEL PUMP OPERATION
under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - V6 & V8 article.NOTE: On Camry, it may be possible that power sun roof may not operate properly if battery is disconnected and reconnected, or battery is discharged and recharged. If power sun roof does not operate properly, perform power sun roof reinitialization procedure. See POWER SUN ROOF REINITIALIZATION PROCEDURE under PROGRAMMING.Fig 1: Exploded View Of Typical Air Intake Chamber & Fuel Rail Components (Avalon, Highlander & Sienna)

- Install and tighten knock sensor(s) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW gaskets. Ensure gaskets for intake manifold are installed with White colored areas facing upward and all holes in gaskets align with holes on cylinder heads. See Fig 1. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Apply light coat of engine oil on tip of pipe on fuel filter to allow for ease of disconnect fitting and fuel inlet hose installation. Using NEW retainer, install fuel inlet hose on fuel filter until "click" sound is heard. DO NOT reuse old retainer. Pull on fuel inlet hose to ensure fuel inlet hose is properly locked on fuel filter.
- Fill cooling system if drained. Install negative battery cable. Operate fuel pump and check for fuel leaks. See FUEL PUMP OPERATION under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - V6 & V8 article.
NOTE:
Gaskets for intake manifold must be installed with White colored areas facing upward. See Fig 1. Ensure all holes in gaskets align with holes on cylinder heads.
CAUTION:
DO NOT reuse old retainer when installing fuel inlet hose on fuel filter. Always use a NEW retainer.
See Figure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Use NEW gaskets when installing fuel inlet hose and fuel pulsation damper on fuel rail. Tighten fuel pulsation damper by hand and then tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
See Figure. Ensure all holes in gaskets align with holes on cylinder heads.
- Install and tighten knock sensor(s) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW gaskets. Tighten bolts/nuts and windshield wiper arm nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Ensure intake manifold bolts/nuts are tightened to specification in sequence. See Figure. Ensure coolant housing bolts/nuts are retightened to specification once intake manifold is installed and the bolts/nuts are tightened to specification.
- Apply light coat of engine oil on tip of fuel pipe fitting to allow for ease of disconnect fitting and No. 1 fuel pipe installation. Using NEW retainer, install No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel pipe fitting until "click" sound is heard. DO NOT reuse old retainer. Pull on No. 1 fuel pipe to ensure fuel pipe is properly locked on fuel pipe fitting.
- Reinstall fuel pipe clamp until "click" sound is heard. Pull upward on fuel pipe clamp to ensure fuel pipe clamp is securely locked on fuel pipe fitting.
- Fill cooling system. Install negative battery cable. Operate fuel pump and check for fuel leaks. See FUEL PUMP OPERATION
under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - V6 & V8 article.NOTE: It may be possible that power sliding doors may not operate properly after battery was disconnected. It may be necessary to perform power sliding door reinitialization procedure to obtain proper sliding door operation. See POWER SLIDING DOOR REINITIALIZATION PROCEDURE under PROGRAMMING.
CAUTION:
DO NOT reuse old retainer when installing No. 1 fuel pipe on fuel pipe fitting. Always use a NEW retainer.
- Install and tighten knock sensor(s) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW gaskets. Apply sealant on coolant by-pass pipe-to-cylinder block sealing surface before installing coolant by-pass pipe. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Use NEW "O" ring coated with gasoline when installing fuel pressure regulator on fuel rail. Fuel pressure regulator should rotate smoothly in fuel rail after installation to ensure proper seating of "O" ring. If fuel pressure regulator fails to rotate smoothly, check for improper "O" ring installation.
- Fill cooling system. Install negative battery cable. Operate fuel pump and check for fuel leaks. See FUEL PUMP OPERATION
under FUEL SYSTEMS in BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES - V6 & V8 article.
