Check Steering Fluid Pressure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Toyota Tundra. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. 5VZ-FE engine:

Remove the air cleaner assembly. See step  1 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP (5VZ-FE) REMOVAL.

  2. 2UZ-FE engine:

Remove the air cleaner assembly with air cleaner hose. See step  1 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP REMOVAL (2UZ-FE).

  3. Disconnect the pressure feed tube from the PS vane pump.
    • 5VZ-FE engine: See  4 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP (5VZ-FE) REMOVAL.
    • 2UZ-FE engine: See  5 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP REMOVAL (2UZ-FE).
  4. CAUTION: Check that the valve of the SST is in the open position.

  5. Connect SST, as shown in Fig 1.

    SST 09640-10010 (09641-01010, 09641-01030,09641-01060)

  6. Bleed the power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING FLUID .
  7. Start the engine and run it at idle.
  8. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to boost fluid temperature.

    Fluid temperature: 80 °C (176 °F)  .

  9. CAUTION:
    • Do not keep the valve closed for more than 10 seconds.
    • Do not let the fluid temperature become too high.

  10. With the engine idling, close the valve of the SST and observe the reading on the SST.

    Minimum fluid pressure: 8,336 kPa (85 kgf/cm 2  , 1,209 psi).

  11. With the engine idling, open the valve fully.
  12. CAUTION: Do not turn the steering wheel.

  13. Measure the fluid pressure at engine speeds of 1,000 RPM and 3,000 RPM.

    Difference fluid pressure: 490 kPa (5 kgf/cm 2  , 71 psi) or less

  14. CAUTION:
    • Do not maintain lock position for more than 10 seconds.
    • Do not let the fluid temperature become too high.

  15. With the engine idling and valve fully opened, turn the steering wheel to full lock.

    Minimum fluid pressure: 8,336 kPa (85 kgf/cm 2  ,1,209 psi)

  16. Disconnect the SST. SST 09640-10010 (09641-01010, 09641-01030,09641-01060).
  17. Connect the pressure feed tube.
    • 5VZ-FE engine. See step  3 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP INSTALLATION (5VZ-FE).
    • 2UZ-FE engine. See step  2 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP INSTALLATION (2UZ-FE).
  18. 5VZ-FE engine:

Install the air cleaner assembly. See  6 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP INSTALLATION (5VZ-FE).

  19. 2UZ-FE engine:

Install the air cleaner assembly with air cleaner hose. See  6 under POWER STEERING VANE PUMP INSTALLATION (2UZ-FE).

  20. Bleed the power steering system. See BLEEDING POWER STEERING FLUID .
