Fuel Pump Resistance & Operation (Avalon, Camry Solara, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Sienna, Tacoma & 4Runner)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 10 other vehicles, including the 2002 Toyota Tundra, 2002 Toyota Tacoma, 2002 Toyota Sienna, 2002 Toyota Sequoia, and 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. On Avalon and Camry Solara, remove rear seat cushion and cover plate on floor panel and remaining necessary covers for access to electrical connector for fuel pump for access to electrical connector at fuel pump.
  2. On Highlander, remove driver's side and passenger's side rear seats and cover plate on floor panel for access to electrical connector for fuel pump.
  3. On Land Cruiser, remove rear seat located above the fuel tank. Remove rear door scuff plates, step plates and rear seat lock covers so carpet may be folded backward for access to top of fuel tank. Remove cover plate on floor panel for access to electrical connector at fuel pump.
  4. On Sienna, manufacturer recommends removing fuel tank for access to fuel pump. On Tacoma, it may be necessary to lower fuel tank for access to electrical connector for fuel pump. On models with rear seats, it may be possible to access electrical connector for fuel pump by removing driver's side rear seat cushion and cover plate on floor panel.
  5. On 4Runner, remove driver's side rear seat cushion and cover plate on floor panel for access to electrical connector for fuel pump.
  6. On all models, disconnect electrical connector for fuel pump. This is electrical connector for fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit and is located on top of fuel tank, near fuel pump. To test fuel pump resistance, using ohmmeter, check resistance between specified terminals on fuel pump electrical connector. See Fig 1-Fig 5 . Replace fuel pump if resistance is not.20-3.00 ohms at 68°F (20°C).
  7. CAUTION: When testing fuel pump operation, DO NOT apply battery voltage to fuel pump for more than 10 seconds or fuel pump may be damaged. When testing fuel pump operation, keep fuel pump away from battery as far as possible. Always connect jumper wires to fuel pump and then to the battery when applying battery voltage to fuel pump.

  8. To test fuel pump operation, apply battery voltage and ground to (+) and (-) terminals on electrical connector for fuel pump. See Fig 1-Fig 5 . DO NOT apply battery voltage to fuel pump for more than 10 seconds. Replace fuel pump and/or lead wire (if equipped) if fuel pump does not operate. See FUEL PUMP under FUEL SYSTEMS in REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION - V6 & V8 article.
